Tyler Steen
The Eagles selected Tyler Steen with the 65th pick in this years’ draft. The former Alabama left tackle may not have the best technique, but he certainly has speed and power. His great lower body strength is evident on film as is his ability to get on the move. The Eagles prefer powerful guards like Landon Dickerson and Brandon Brooks to compliment their agile centers. Steen fits this description. While he might not win the starting guard spot this year against Jurgens and Driscoll, I still think Steen is their best long-term option at the guard once Kelce retires at center. If Jeff Stoutland believes he can develop Steen into a starting-caliber offensive lineman, then this is a great pick.
Sydney Brown
The Eagles selected another really athletic player with the 66th overall pick. The 2023 PFF Draft Guide asserts that, “Brown is the single best athlete in this safety class”. There’s a lot to like about Brown. He’s versatile in coverage, explosive, and intelligent. The Eagles’ front office noted the Illinois safety as one of their only “red star” players in the class. However, Brown is not a perfect prospect. He’s barely 5 ft. 10 inches tall and has limited experience at deep safety. In 2022, he only played 60 snaps from a deep safety alignment. Additionally, Brown was a poor tackler throughout college. He posted a missed tackle rate higher than 15% every year of his career. Still, the upside is undeniable as Brown could potentially fill the do-it-all safety role within Sean Desai’s defense that Justin Simmons and Eddie Jackson have popularized in recent years.
